Today’s “Kaddish” recording is the first in a series made in the dressing room before our rehearsals and performances of Charlotte Adams’ “Catch” in the University of Iowa’s “Dance Gala 2011.” These are at once recordings of Kogan’s “Kaddish,” my nightly warm-up before going onstage, and a slice of the life backstage at a dance theater. You hear the nervous excitement of the dancers getting dressed, chatting with each other, listening to headbanger music on their Macs or iPods or iPhones, putting on make-up, and psyching themselves and each other up to perform. You also hear the wardrobe assistants getting people squared away, the stage manager calling fifteen minute before.<\/p>\n
Unfortunately, this series of recordings is pretty crappy, because I chose an incorrect input setting (soft clipping) on my FiRE2 recording app, which basically sets all inputs down to a uniformly low level, making it sound like I play the entire piece with barely any dynamic contrast.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
